Harnessing the natural strength of collagen.
100% collagen recycled material with leather-like performance. Strong, customisable and finished by your tannery.
What it is
Our material recovers collagen from wet-blue waste and rebuilds it into a continuous sheet with customisable thickness and a suede-like feel. There are no added synthetic materials, only organic protein fibres, like virgin leather, and the chromium inherited from wet-blue tanning. The fibres are reformed into the continuous sheet using our patent-pending process.
"100% collagen" describes the absence of added formulation constituents, not chemical purity.
Specification
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | Around twice that of comparable leather (average across multiple tests*) |
| Stiffness | Similar to comparable leather* |
| Thickness | Specified to suit the application. Tested at common thicknesses, no theoretical upper limit* |
| Density | Theoretically adjustable |
| Feel and texture | Suede-like when unfinished. The original grain is not retained in recycling, but any leather texture can be matched by embossing |
| Finish | Specified as with existing leather, through your tannery |
*As confirmed by two unpublished Queen Mary University of London papers, to be published now that the patent application has been filed.
Finishing
Embossing and downstream finishing at the tannery can create application-specific surfaces, adjusting texture, appearance and capabilities to suit your customers.
Testing and qualification
Development starts with automotive, aviation and rail, so durability, flammability and customer approvals come first. Approvals cover a defined construction, so changes to finish or thickness may need further testing.
Patent
UK patent application GB 2623270.2, covering the process, was filed on 2 October 2026.
Frequently asked questions
What is Axoloro's material made from?
It is made from wet-blue tannery waste: trimmings, scraps, splits, shavings and dust. We recover the collagen and rebuild it into a continuous, leather-like sheet.
What does 100% collagen mean?
It means nothing was added: no synthetic binders, plastics, backings or glue. It does not mean chemical purity, as the material still contains the chromium inherited from wet-blue tanning.
Who finishes and sells the material?
Tanneries. We sell the sheet back to the tannery, which finishes it with its existing processes and sells it to its existing customers.
Can I get a sample?
Tanneries and brands can join the waiting list for a sample through the request a sample page. We can't send samples to individuals just yet.
Is the process patented?
A UK patent application, GB 2623270.2, covering the process was filed on 2 October 2026.
Who supports Axoloro?
We are backed by the Henry Royce Institute (Royce Catalyst), the University of Sheffield (Emerge) and Innovate UK Business Connect (ICURe Discovery).
What will the material be used for first?
Our first focus is automotive, aviation and rail interiors, where durability and flammability approvals matter most. Other uses include accessories, footwear and furniture.
